The South West Coast Path is based on the paths trodden by generations of coastguards as they patrolled the cliffs and coves searching for smugglers. The South West coastline is stunning with many changes of scenery: magnificent cliffs with views of Lundy, one of the largest sand dune systems in Britain now designated an area of special scientific interest, long winding estuaries with large flocks of wading birds, and vast expanses of sandy beaches making this area one of the UK's most popular with surfers. The South West Coast Path passes through quaint Devon villages with cobbled streets, picturesque Cornish fishing villages, and headlands to rival Land's End.
